What's For Dinner (More Like Lunch): La Boulangerie

Salmon Bagel

La Boulangerie, located on Magazine Street in the Garden District, is a French bakery/coffee shop that also serves alcohol. That was not a lie. This is NOT a drill. They freaking serve alcohol! I visited this adorable bakery on a whim (even though it's on my list of places to try) and am so glad I decided to try it when I did. I absolutely CANNOT wait to go back for more. Their menu is sooooo pescatarian/vegetarian-friendly. More on that in a little while!

Atmosphere

Okay, this is the peeeerfect place to come to do your homework, work on your next novel, or just sip your coffee. I could sit here every single day and be absolutely content. While this is a popular lunch spot and patrons are coming in and out of the restaurant, everyone minds their own business. You will very unlikely be bothered if you're truly working. La Boulangerie does play music, but it's not overwhelming and it will not interfere with whatever you have playing in your headphones. I would describe La Boulangerie as an upscale Starbucks. This means that it has coffeehouse vibes with delicious food that also serves alcohol. I know, I know we will get to that soon!

The Menu

You get a vegetarian dish! You get a vegetarian dish! You get a vegetarian dish! Do you see my point?? I tried the smoked salmon bagel which comes on a delicious (y'all my stomach is growling while I type this) everything bagel that has been toasted. It's got cream cheese, tomato, capers, red onion, and the almighty smoked salmon. I know this is pescatarian-friendly but there are other options. I also tried La Boulangerie's avocado toast. This has scrambled egg, radishes, toasted seeds, and of course, avocado, all on whole wheat sourdough. Personally, I felt like this dish could have had more salt, but y'all, that's an easy fix! It was still plenty flavorful and the textures were superb!

Let's get more into detail. 'Le Vegetarian' (hmmmm, sounds familiar) has mozzarella, tomato, pecan pesto, and basil leaf and balsamic reduction. Oh, did I mention it's on rosemary and sea salt focaccia??? Shit. If you're not running to La Boulangerie now, I don't know what to say. I'm over here starving looking at this delicious menu and having to type it all out again! Okay, moving forward. There is a cobb salad which is your standard cobb salad, but can be asked to have without bacon. My friend mentioned she had the 'Le Dindon.' This has turkey (she asked for this sans as I believe she's a vegetarian), avocado, basil mayonnaise, arugula, and tomato on six grain bread. Of course, being that La Boulangerie is a bakery, you will get your standard pastries and breads. They have bagels, sweet and savory pastries, fresh baked breads, and cakes and pies available upon special request.

Cocktails

No, the above photograph is not meant to be funny. I literally did NOT get any alcohol on this trip. Oh, c'mon. Don't be shocked! I was "working," and it was, like, noon on a Tuesday. That actually hasn't stopped me before, but I just wasn't feeling the alcohol on this particular day. The selection at La Boulangerie is very limited, and they made it explicitly clear that one cannot take their alcoholic beverage off of the premises. (Again, thanks, Covid!) So, let's get into the grittiness. According to the menu I picked up, wines are sold by the bottle, and you've got your standard red, white, rosé, and bubbles. By my standards, the wine is a little expensive, but I know not everyone can be "Three Buck Chuck." They range from $25.00 to $30.00. La Boulangerie also offers beer. It's two local brews - Gnarly Barley's 'Jucifer' and Urban South's 'Paradise Park.'

Since I didn't get any alcoholic beverages, let's talk about the non-alcoholic beverages. I did get unsweetened peach iced tea, and that was perfect for my meal. They've got Mexican coke, diet coke and Barqs root beer, San Pellegrino (blood orange, grapefruit, or lemon), freshly squeezed orange juice, white or chocolate milk, and Mt. Valley Spring Water (still or sparkling). Of course, La Boulangerie has coffee. It's from a local roaster called Congregation Coffee Roasters. They offer fresh drip and cold brew coffee. From the menu I picked up, I don't see any teas, but they are offered.

Pricing

Overall, I'd say La Boulangerie is fairly priced. I didn't feel like anything was overly expensive, except for maybe the wine. My smoked salmon bagel was $12.50 and my avocado toast was $7.50. The most expensive thing(s) on the menu was listed at $12.50. A bagel is $3.00. Their yogurt parfait is $5.00. I'm sure if you got a custom cake or pie, the price would be outstandingly more, but I, unfortunately, did not ask that question. Honestly, there isn't much else to say about the price. It's really reasonable.

You can bet your patootie that I will be back to La Boulangerie! I'm already fantasizing about their 'Le Vegetarian.' (Insert drooling emoji here.) How did this 'What's For Dinner' post feel? Do you like the variety in places? I would never take you on a foodie journey and have every place cost a fortune! I've already been to my next place, and I cannot wait to share it with you!! Drop y'all's thoughts below in the comments.
